Agni V The Basics

Successfully tested by DRDO along Orissa coast off Wheeler island, and with this test India enters an elite club of nations (US,UK,France,China,Russia) possessing ICBM technology.

What is ICBM:

• ICBM stands for Inter Continental Ballistic Missile a range of missiles traveling a distance more than 3500 Km and attacking specified Targets.
• Ballistic missiles are those following a parabolic trajectory.
• They mainly rely on using the gravitational force during downward flight, hence compromising on accuracy as against the cruise missiles which are guided throughout their travel path to attack targets effectively and accurately.
• But these are compact and less expensive. They have three phases in their travel path.
• Initial Boost phase when the propellants burn and push them, Mid course Phase when they move up due to initial momentum(Usually Exo atmospheric phase), Re-entry phase (Free fall under gravity after initial guidance toward target).
• Agni series of India has 5 versions starting from 700Km to 5000Km target distance.
• Agni 5 capable of traveling 5000+ Kms also has MIRV( Multiple Independently targetable reentry vehicles), that is capability to attack multiple targets on ground also hampering efficiency of anti missile protection systems of opponents. 

MIRV system- Multiple targets over large area can be attacked . Post Boost vehicle maneuvers and guides itself to individual targets
