Syrian Peace

Syrian peace process hanging in the Balance:

Problem with Syria:
  • Became independent by 1946, coups have been common since then.
  • Latest happened in 1970 when defense minister Hafez-al-assad seized power.
  • Syria since then ruled by single party, the Baath party(Alaawites, section of shia muslims).
  • Now in recent Arab uprisingoppositions call for the president Bashar al Assad to step down, supported by Arab league, GCC, US etc.,
  • The ruling regime supported by Russia, China, Iran etc.,
  • Peace initiatives are taken now and then, recent one involving Kofi Annan UN peace envoy.
